Overcoming Resistance + Becoming Stronger
Living a 'fit' life
"WHEN I FACED ADVERSITY, I FOCUSED ON MY STRENGTHS..."
From the age of seven, I was learning how to become resilient and develop grit and I didn't know it. I was known as the ugly, fat girl throughout elementary. Looking back, I wasn't ugly nor was I fat - it was just that physical activity wasn't my strong point and also, I didn't speak up do to my shyness so I became an easy target to be made of and it hurt - big time!
However, for some reason I was able to keep myself in high spirits. I focused on my strengths and creative talents which were in writing. I also focused on developing my core weakness in speaking. Both in sticking up for myself by speaking up and also literally in reading aloud and confidently engaging in public speaking.
"FAILURE, DOUBT AND JUDGEMENTS GAVE ME MOTIVATION TO CRUSH MY GOALS..."
My struggles with depression got in the way of me attracting certain opportunities. There was a time when I inquired about getting into the teacher education program and I was told that I would never be admitted into such a program anywhere due to my undergrad grades. The short story, I upgraded, I worked hard at my job as a high school career advisor at the time and I got into the teacher education program. Not only did I get in, I was accelerated through the program and completed an 18 month program in 9 months and landed my first teaching job immediately!
In weight lifting the processes of getting stronger is called training to failure. I've come to realize that this is literally a metaphor for how I've succeeded with my endeavours my whole life! I'd fail or get rejected and use it as motivation to learn and get stronger and I would silence everyone's assumptions by crushing my goals.
I became a workaholic and began to lead an 'unfit' lifestyle. I decided to get a personal trainer and get 'fit.' Again, physical activity wasn't my thing and my personal trainer bluntly told me that I was out-of-shape and I pretty much sucked at lifting weights. I was so weak that I started off with 5lbs weights. Well, I used her feedback to not only lose all the unhealthy weight, but also to get strong enough to work my way up to lifting 30lbs weights. I even ended up competing in two fitness competitions.
"TODAY, I'M FOCUSED ON LIVING A 'FIT' LIFE AND EDUCATING OTHERS ON HEALTH AND HAPPINESS"
I believe that everything we experience lead us to our greater purpose. In my case, adversity helped me become resilient and develop grit; my weaknesses with speaking and physical activity pushed into developing these 'weak muscles;' and all the failures, rejection and judgements that I faced all motivated me towards creating my own happiness and living in good health. Also, I've learned that becoming fit is a physical and mental process.
My purpose is to motivate others, to uplift people and to educate everyone on living a fit life and on become healthier and happier. Follow me on Instagram for a daily dose of motivation and check out my 7 complimentary programs on becoming more 'fit' - body + mind.
